Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge, Pine Creek Unit

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

This coming Thursday we will be going to the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge, Pine Creek Unit. This is a new site for our group, and also new for the Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge.

There are two considerations for this site: 1st., We will be walking a total of about 1.3 miles (for comparison, the second viewing stand at 7 Mile Ln. is about 1 mile round trip). This will all be on packed dirt roads or graveled roads. 2nd., When I was at Pine Creek Unit in early January, there were no bathroom facilities yet.

For carpooling, the meeting site has been changed from Albertson’s parking lot, to across the street at OSH’s parking, lot in the North West corner of the lot. This will give us more room to meet. We will still meet, and plan to leave OSH at 9 A.M.

For a Google map to SRNWR Pine Creek Unit, select Directions to Chico Bird Watching Sites.

See you Thursday morning,

Carl

Horseshoe Lake Birds

Sunday, February 11th, 2007

Hi Everyone,

Even though the weather did not cooperate, we did see a nice group of birds on Thursday.

One of our group saw a White-tailed Kite across the street from Wildwood Park on the way home. I hope most of you got to see the Western Bluebirds on the fence next to the Golf Course.

I was not able to compare notes with most of you Thursday so I’m not sure my list is complete.

Here is the list of birds that were sighted Thursday:

Horseshoe Lake

Great Blue Heron
Canada Goose
Mallard
White-tailed Kite
American Kestrel
American Coot
Killdeer

If you saw a bird not on the list, leave a comment so the rest of us can add it to our list.

Next Thursday we will be going to the Feather River Park Way in Oroville. This is always a good spot for birds. We will be meeting at the Park and Ride Lot #2 at 9:00 A.M. Thursday 2/15/07. If you want to drive over on your own some time, visit Directions to Chico Birdwatching Sites on this blog for directions and a map.
